Should You Get Threads for Your Business?
Last week, Instagram launched a new app called Threads. It’s an app that looks a lot like Twitter - text-focused in which you can share your thoughts, and reshare and/or comment on other’s thoughts.
The social media enthusiast in me totally geeked out on this launch. Within a couple hours they had millions of accounts. And within five days of launching there were 100 million users on the app, making this the fastest growth for a social media app EVER!
The app currently allows 500 characters and you can post some photos, although from my experience most people are keeping those to a minimum. Most people seem to be leaning into the text-only posts, commenting on how great it is to create content that doesn’t require a shower.
And because it is associated with Instagram, you can easily open a Threads account by using the same log-in information. Threads will automatically pull your bio info, handle and profile photo. Set-up is literally the easiest thing ever!
So, all of this begs the question… should you get a Threads account for your business?
As with most things, my answer is: it depends!
Personally, given my profession I tend to grab an account on each new app that is getting some attention. For me it helps to know about the apps, understand how they work, and get a better feel for the questions clients might ask about them.
The benefits of hopping into the fray early is that you secure your handle and you’re at the start of the trend - learning the ropes along with everyone else.
The downside is you might spend time learning a new platform that doesn’t last.
So, if you are curious and you like being an early adopter of new tech and apps, then by all means download it and start playing along.
If the very idea of another app gives you hives, no worries. You don’t need to hop on yet another platform just because 100 million people already have!
For those who do decide to download the app, a few words of advice.
One: NO ONE is a Threads expert yet. Anyone who is already posting the ways to go viral, tips for growing followers, how they went from 0-10,000 overnight, is all a bunch of baloney.
Two: Have fun! The app is new, the future of it and what it will become is unknown. You have the chance to help shape that! Get on, post, interact, engage without worrying about numbers! We’re all learning this new app together. Let’s have some fun while doing it.
Three: As with any social media platform, the goal is to connect, to build community. This is a perfect opportunity to do just that, starting from the ground up. Focus on bringing value and connecting with people!
Four: Give yourself time limits. In the first couple days I saw too many posts of people talking about losing hours and hours on the app, missing bedtimes and deadlines as they dove into the depths of threads. It’s a new tempting shiny object. It’s a new chance for lots of dopamine hits. But let’s remember, social media apps are not the be-all end-all of your life and business. And threads is no exception.
Five: Follow people you want to see in your feed. Go ahead and unfollow those who maybe came over from IG that you aren’t interested in following here. The platform is different, the content is different. There may be accounts you love to see on IG because of their pictures or videos, that just don’t have the same attraction on threads. That’s okay.
