You Don’t Need To Be on Every Platform!
True confessions time! While I usually have an account on every social media platform so I know what’s going on and can be knowledgeable about it when a client asks, I actually have little interest in posting to Snapchat for my business.
Now, that’s not to say that Snapchat isn’t going to be useful to you or your business. It might actually be the platform that gets your business off the ground!
But trust me on this: if you’re on every single social media platform, you’re wasting your time and probably spinning your wheels.
I mean, consider all the options! Off the top of my head: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, BeReal, WhatsApp, Pinterest, Reddit, LinkedIn, Twitch… and then there is podcasting, blog writing, and on and on it goes.
It’s a Waste of Your Time!
That’s a lot of content to be creating when you’re a solopreneur or even if you’re a small business with a dedicated team. If you’re trying to create content for even just a portion of that list above, I’m willing to bet one of two things is happening. One: You’re not posting quality, consistent content. Two: You’re dropping the ball in other areas of your business.
Neither of those options is a good one, especially when it is really unnecessary to be on every social media platform.
Your Audience Isn’t Everywhere!
Each platform has a target audience associated with it. The demographics vary VASTLY from platform to platform. Young, old, middle aged, male, female, professional, academic, artsy, visual, auditory… This means if you’re on all the platforms you’re definitely delivering your business pitch to a whole lot of uninterested people. Again, a waste of your time.
Your Business Fits Some Platforms Better Than Others.
There are certain platforms that are better aligned to the type of business you have. For instance, if you have a very visual product or service, you’ll want to lean into platforms that have a heavy visual component.
You Miss the Chance for Customization.
If you’re on all the platforms it’s likely that you’re sharing the exact same content no matter the social media outlet. That’s an ineffective way to use social media for your business. Each platform has different specs and highlights different elements. Pinterest focuses on the images. TikTok is all about the video. Twitter emphasizes text. Longer captions do better on Facebook than on Instagram. The list is practically endless of the differences, even when the platforms seem similar.
Posting the exact same image and caption to each platform is failing to tap into the features and preferences that make each outlet unique, and therefore misses the chance to connect with as many people as possible.
Rather than establish yourself on every platform and wear yourself out creating content for each outlet, hand select the platforms that are best for you and your business!
