Debunking the 7 Biggest Myths about Working with a Social Media Manager

After being at this for a while and answering a lot of the same questions over and over again from business owners, I want to debunk the 7 biggest myths about working with a social media manager. Hopefully this list helps you make an informed decision - whether you decide to work with Rosebud Social or someone else!

  1. Myth: Social media managers are only for large corporations.

Reality: Social media managers cater to businesses of all sizes. Each manager is different! There are huge corporate organizations that have dozens and dozens of social media managers that work for big companies,  and there are smaller businesses like mine with a handful of dedicated account managers that help other small businesses.

When you’re looking, I highly recommend finding a company or a specific social media manager that has experience in your field. Doing that ensures their expertise can be tailored to fit your specific business goals.

  2. Myth: Social media managers only post content.

Reality: I’d have a lot more free time, if this one was true! A social media manager's role extends far beyond posting content. We develop comprehensive social media strategies, conduct market research, analyze data, engage with the audience, monitor trends, and constantly optimize posts to achieve the desired outcomes. We are responsible for creating a cohesive brand image and driving engagement. A lot goes into accomplishing all of this. And yes, we also post to social media - a lot!

  3. Myth: Hiring a social media manager is an unnecessary expense.

Reality: While it may seem like an added cost, investing in a social media manager can yield significant returns. Sure the ROI is difficult to quantify at times, but we possess the knowledge and experience to optimize your social media efforts, resulting in increased brand visibility, improved customer engagement, and, hopefully, higher conversion rates.

Plus, our expertise will save you valuable time and resources that you can then put into other areas of your business. Imagine having all the time you currently spending on social media free to spend on your actual biz.

  4. Myth: Social media managers only focus on vanity metrics.

Reality: While metrics like follower count and likes are important, social media managers understand the significance of meaningful engagement and conversions. We analyze data, measure key performance indicators (KPIs), and use insights to refine strategies. My team meets every month to brainstorm about each of the clients, looking for trends and analyzing insights to better create content for the following month.

Honestly, if you’ve seen any of my other posts you know my great dislike for vanity metrics.

  5. Myth: Social media managers can instantly make a business go viral.

Reality: This might be the myth I’m most often explaining to clients. Going viral is a rare occurrence and not something that can be guaranteed. Many, many factors contribute to something going viral organically. Social media managers focus on creating consistent and quality content, leveraging strategies to increase visibility, engagement, and brand loyalty over time. And then when something does go viral we analyze the heck out of it and try to repeat that same formula to help other content succeed.

  6. Myth: Social media management is a one-size-fits-all approach.

I understand this myth, because for some social media managers this isn’t actually a myth - they serve one niche client and make the same basic posts for everyone. But for us, this is a myth.

Reality: Every business is unique, and social media managers understand this. We tailor each bit of content to align with your brand's voice, target audience, and specific goals. There are no cookie-cutter posts here - even when working in a niche.

  7. Myth: Social media managers just spend all day on social media

Reality: Social media managers spend a lot of time on social media on behalf of their clients but they also spend a lot of time doing other work. My team probably spends more time writing captions in Google Docs and creating graphics in Canva than we do on social media. We are knowledgeable about content creation, copywriting, graphic design, analytics, advertising, keywords and SEO and stay updated with the latest trends and algorithms. We are constantly adapting to the ever-evolving social media landscape to maximize your business's online presence.
